Expanded Clay to Improve the Substrate

Clay Pebbles are used in various different types of grows, especially when it comes to growing cannabis.

Improve substrate drainage

It can be used at the bottom of your flower pots to help drain out more water from your plants’ substrate, making sure that the water doesn’t pool at the bottom of the pot which can cause some real issues with your plants’ roots. You can also place some clay pebbles at the bottom of your cutting Propagator + Tray Kit to reduce humidity.

Hydroponic Substrate

They can also be used in hydroponics, filling your mesh puts with clay pebbles and planting your seeds or cuttings in rockwool cubes. You can reuse clay pebbles as much as you want as long as you clean them of any residues. If you’re growing with new clay you will need to balance its pH to 5.5 overnight before planting – it’s an annoying process, although once done you won’t ever have to do it again.

How to Prepare Clay for Growing

Wash them through with clean tap water and a large sieve until the water begins running through completely clean – if you don’t do this, your water tank could become blocked up with dirt. Now, prepare a container with osmosis water adjusted to a 5.5 pH (it’ll need a 0.0 EC) and let the clay sit there for 24-48h.

You’ll probably need to lower the pH a few times until it’s at 5.5 – they’ll fight to go back up to 7 pH. Once you have them down to 5.5 you can start growing using clay pebbles!
